Today we will look into the Classification and Grouping of Succulent plants. The grouping of different families of succulents is purely for practical purposes, mainly for home gardeners to make it easy to identify the different succulent plants and how to care for them, specially, the Winter Succulents and the Summer Succulents classification.

There are more than 10,000 species of succulents and following the botanical CLASSIFICATION AND TAXONOMY is difficult for home garders. For all practical purposes and identifications at home gardening level. You can follow 10 main groups of succulents or the summer and winter plants grouping.


10 Main Groups of Succulents
Group 1 Agavaceae – eg: Agave
Group 2 Apocynaceae – eg: Adenium
Group 3 Aspholdelaceae – Eg: Aloe
Group 4 Asteraceae - eg: Daisy
Group 5 Cactaceae - eg: Cactus
Group 6 Crassulaceae - eg: Jade
Group 7 Euphorbiaceae - eg: Euphorbia
Group 8 Mesembryanthemaceae - eg: Ice Plant
Group 9 Unusual Stem Succulents
Group 10 Unusual Leaf Succulents


We shall not go into the details of this classification further, but instead we we will classify them as SUMMER GROWERS & WINTER GROWERS for practical purposes.

COMMON SUMMER GROWERS: THAT IS Winter Dormancy Succulents – MEANING they remain active in summer and dormant in winter.
They are grouped into the following Species:

•Adenium
•Echeveria
•Euphorbia
•Ficus
•Lithops
•Pachypodium
•Plumeria
•Stapelianthus




Common WINTER GROWERS
They are Summer Dormancy Succulents meaning they are active in winter and dormant in summer season.
They are grouped into the following Species:
•Aeonium
•Aloe Vera
•Crassula
•Dudleya
•Gasteria
•Graptopetalum
•Graptoveria
•Haworthia
•Kalanchoe
•Pelargonium
•Sansevieria
•Sedum
•Senecio
•Sempervivum
