Why Engine Cooling Is So Important

Here's how your car's cooling system works to keeping the engine operating safely and efficiently. The purpose of the engine cooling system is to keep the engine block cool from the heat of combustion, to keep cabin occupants warm during the winter and to cool engine oil, transmission oil and throttle body components. A typical engine may run around 200F for optimal efficiency. Any warmer, and engine components could warp, overheat and burn too hot. Any cooler, and emissions would be increased due to excessive fuel consumption. The cooling system is comprised of the radiator, radiator fan (electric or mechanical), the hoses and pipes, the throttle body, oil cooler, transmission cooler, temperature sensor, radiator cap, overflow tank, thermostat, water pump, engine head and engine block. These work together as a closed loop control system that is self regulating to keep engine temperatures optimal despite environmental conditions. The coolant temperature sensor feeds into the ECU to provide inputs for fuel trims, transmission control, HVAC settings and ignition timing. Make sure you check your coolant level and its effectiveness and change it as requested by the manufacturer. While water pumps don't need to be changed until failure, its good preventative maintenance especially if other related engine work (such as a timing belt or chain replacement) is performed at the same time to save on labor costs.
