After weeks of disruptive occupation in Ottawa, police forces have begun clearing operations, clamping down on protesters still refusing to leave despite days of warnings. Mike Armstrong looks at how officers moved in, made arrests, and dealt with defiant occupiers who continue to push back against authorities.

The police strategy in downtown Ottawa is also unlike anything seen in recent memory for other large-scale protests, as authorities started with a slow and coordinated effort to push demonstrators out. Mercedes Stephenson looks at the tactics being used and how the situation evolved. And Sean O'Shea reports from the centre of the unrest, on the escalating situation among the protesters, who remain defiant despite the massive operation.

Meanwhile in Europe, Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine are now urging hundreds of thousands of civilians to evacuate into Russia, over claims a Ukrainian attack is imminent on disputed regions. But as Jackson Proskow reports, the Kremlin's claims of a so-called 'genocide' underway lack evidence, amid accusations Moscow is trying to find pretext for a full invasion.

As that risk of an invasion of Ukraine rises, organizations in neighbouring Poland are already bracing for a high influx of refugees fleeing into the west. Crystal Goomansingh reports from Poland on the strategy being implemented to take care of what could be tens of thousands of displaced Ukrainians.

Also, Canada's medal count continues to climb, as the Winter Olympics in Beijing head into their final weekend.
