ATV finally has a new drum set, the EXS-5SK. It's time to see if it's worth buying.
Sizes:
18” Kick drum, 13” snare, for the toms you get two 10” hi toms, and a 13” floor tom. The cymbals are 14” for the two piece hi hats, you get two 14” crash cymbals, and a 16” ride cymbal.
Module Specs:
The module comes preloaded with 5 uncompressed kits. There’s an included SD card, so you can go on the ATV website to download more kits as well. There’s a total of 18 kits available to you, 5 built in, and 13 for download on the website (all currently priced at $0). There’s a built-in song player, recorder, and metronome. On the back you have the outputs in addition to your headphone jack, the input for crash two, classic MIDI port, a USB MIDI port, and a SD Card slot. And that’s about it. This module is inexpensive and incredibly simple. If you buy it separately, it costs $300 (sale price).
Link to the manual if you want to read up on what it can do:
Price: $2799
Pros:
Good combination of drum and cymbals. You get this hybrid look of a more acoustic sized kick and snare combo, with more traditional electronic tom pads.
The snare and kick drum benefit from the added shell depth and weight, you can feel a difference.
The cymbals are all great. They have 360 triggering, so if they spin away from you, there’s no issue. The hi-hats are pretty good too. There was a new firmware update to the module so it can better handle the snare and kick that comes with this.
You can import songs, and loop a certain section that you’re trying to learn perfectly.
The quality of the cymbals and drums is great.
Good sturdy drum rack.
Uncompressed samples, so the dynamic range is really wide and responsive to your playing.
Solid drum rack
Cons:
Pads are maxed out
No Tom rim zones
The module is super limited, it’s the Achilles heel of the whole drum set. You can read the manual super quick, because there’s not much to learn about.
While the toms pads are dual zone to my knowledge, the module itself is only capable of single zone performance for the toms inputs. This makes no sense on a drum set of this price point.
You can’t EQ the drums
There’s reverb or ambience controls at all. These are super dry sounds and there’s nothing you can do to change it, apart from connecting your module to a guitar pedal.
There’s no compression controls.
You only get 2 outputs
The number of kits is super low on a drum set of this price range.
Rate of innovation:
ATV hasn't made a new drum set since 2018, so this was a welcome addition to the line up. I will say I think they've come out with some cool cymbals and more sounds in the meantime, so they weren't sitting around doing nothing all this time. But I want to see more all new drum sets and modules. (note, the EXS line was announced in 2018, but didn't ship around the whole world until 2019)
