ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
James Brown alumni Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis lay down some funky jazz.
Back in the day, when the James Brown band was in full swing, the hardest working man in show business would at crucial points during the show call out, “Maceo”–and then the action would ramp up yet another notch. For Brown was summoning Maceo Parker to the microphone, one of the ace horn soloists in his super tight band. Parker would then blow a bluesy solo that would boil the funk to just the right degree.
Years after he left Brown, Parker still had funk in his soul, as he proves– alongside two other great alumni from the Brown band, trombonist Fred Wesley and tenor saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis–at the 1991 Stuttgart performance. Now in charge of the ensemble, Parker was also able to allow himself and the other horn players to indulge their leanings toward jazz and the blues as well as funk and R&B. On extended solos, Parker, Wesley and Ellis display individual mastery and, during ensemble sections, amazing cohesiveness as a horn unit. Obviously the years of playing together as part of Brown’s aggregation, and the subsequent time as the JB Horns, had conjoined these three men in fist-tight unity. With the ace rhythm section of Jimmy Madison on drums, Ronald Muldrow on guitar and Larry Goldings manning the electric keyboard and pumping bass lines with his feet, the band builds up a groove that’s both soulful and propulsive.
In a performance that dips into such classics as “Cold Sweat” and “Doing It to Death” Parker and company churn up the room with the kind of energy that would have made Brown proud.
