ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
First appearing in the post-war period in the United States, in an institute for blind people, The Blind Boys of Alabama have since become legends of the gospel world. Admired by Prince, who once joined them on stage, by Ben Harper, who recorded an album with them, and more generally by the soul-rock elite including Tom Waits, Chrissie Hynde and George Clinton, this vocal ensemble (some of whose members have since passed away) have produced an authentic and timeless repertoire.
Described by the Rolling Stones as “gospel titans,” the Blind Boys of Alabama live up to their reputation with a powerful set at the Moods Club. Backed by a discreet but effective orchestra, the vocal group unfolds a whole spectrum of Afro-American religious tradition. The singers’ closeness is evident, and they deliver each track with remarkable energy. Additionally, this skilful performance elucidates the natural links between the famous spirituals music genre and more recent music such as rhythm and blues and soul. This rings particularly true when you consider the importance of the church and the impact of religion on stars such as Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples and Marvin Gaye–demonstrated here by a cover of “Higher Ground,” a funky hymn by the great Stevie Wonder.
