Brass bands are typical of New Orleans. Heirs to the marching bands, these ensembles have since carefully assimilated into the musical and public life of the region. The Hot 8 and The Dirty Dozen are among the finest Louisiana bands, and international groups are just as seductive; a case in point being Gangbé, an incredible collective from Benin. Spanning several different styles and musical approaches, these groups perform at NOLA’s events and celebrations as well as at commemorations and funerals.

The New Breed Brass Band, associated with the highly acclaimed Trombone Shorty, encapsulates this complex musical repertoire. By turns festive and structured, open to a world of influences and yet instantly recognizable, the production is resolutely funky and harkens back to other urban genres such as Washington's exuberant go-go or Nigerian Afrobeat. A true link between genres, this brass band is complemented here by two characteristic sets from Topsy Chapman and Kirk Andrés Wilson. Chapman, a gospel legend, is accompanied for the occasion by Solid Harmony. And the latter delivers an elegant jazz repertoire, a musical production largely influenced by his hometown.
