ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
The underlining theme for this 2016 musical documentary film by director Jean-Francois Menadieri is the legendary recording studio Château d’Hérouville outside of Paris. The 18th century stone structure had been the site for countless classic recordings from jazz (Chet Baker) to r&b (Marvin Gaye) to a multitude of pop/rock artists including Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, David Bowie, the Bee Gees and Elton John who named his 1972 album Honky Château after the studio. The renovated state-of-the-art studio on the top floor of the building continues to be active as is evidenced in this film with two in-depth personal views of the electronics music trio Metronomy from London and U.S. baritone jazz star Gregory Porter—both in awe of the recording setting. The two marquee performers join together for an impressive version of the soul-pop song “Sunny.” But it’s Porter who we first meet as he inspects the house, walking up the open stairway adorned by photos of the artists who had visited and then ascending into the homey studio in anticipation of his band arriving. When the band comes into the picture, they record several tunes, including “Liquid Spirit” and “Don’t Lose Your Stream.” Of note, this is an introduction to rising-star saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin who today ranks as a top-tier jazz player. While the film serves as a special sampler of the artists, they were inspired. Porter says, “I could come in here for two weeks and make a record.”
