As defence preparedness escalates across Asia, Taiwan has intensified its efforts to counter a potential Chinese invasion. On Thursday (July 17), Taiwan conducted its annual air raid exercise in Taipei, bringing the capital to a standstill for half an hour. While some residents expressed optimism that these exercises heighten public vigilance, others remained sceptical about their effectiveness in a real war scenario. These civil defence drills coincided with Taiwan's largest-ever Han Kuang exercise. This intensified focus on defence comes as China continues to exert military pressure, with fighter jets routinely circling the self-ruled island. Tensions have heightened since President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing views as a separatist, took office last year. Taiwan has maintained that its exercises are not about seeking war, but about deterring it through robust preparedness.
