ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
On November 18, 2015, Chicago blues guitarist and vocalist Jimmy Johnson highlighted the Blues Sur Seine Festival with his robust set of gospel-drenched, bold-faced music that gained him entry into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2018. Born in Mississippi in 1928 and then moving to Chicago with his family in 1950, Johnson quickly jumped into the scene, inspired in part by Otis Rush and Buddy Guy. While he made a name for himself in the city, the word of his talent took flight in Europe where he performed as a headliner for many years. This show showcases Johnson with an all-European band backing him in the 17th edition of the festival blossoming in Seine Valley.
This show takes place at the impressive Louis Jouvet Cultural Center in Bonnières sur Seine. When Johnson takes the stage, he jokes with the audience: “Don’t be so quiet….you’re making me nervous.” He then explains that he started playing music in gospel groups which is the perfect intro to his first song. He plays an r&b-tinged, eight-minute version of Curtis Mayfield’s ”People Get Ready” with spirited emotions. His superb take on the classic wins over the crowd as he energetically delivers blues rockers that he jokingly introduces as the “devil’s music.” Even though his latest stateside shows, accordingly to his website calendar, have been waylaid by the Covid surge in the past two years, before that he was settled into Chicago at such blues houses as Lagunitas Brewery and the club Buddy Guy’s Legends, owned and operated by the king of Chicago blues.
