ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
While Cajun music incorporates European influences (a quality enhanced by the inclusion of a wide range of rhythms, dependent on the generation), zydeco, on the other hand, is strongly rooted in the African-American community. Represented by legends such as Clifton Chenier and Buckwheat Zydeco, this lively style assimilates local instruments such as the washboard and chromatic accordion, and incorporates elements of blues as well as rhythm and blues. Performing on the New Orleans Live stage, Rockin’ Dopsie and The Zydeco Twisters attest to the richness of this Louisiana-born genre, particularly with the powerful “My Tee Fee.”
Tonya Boyd-Cannon, another representative of New Orleans and a highlight of this varied program, delivers a stunning jazz-toned soul track (also featured on the bill are rapper The Wave, the brassy chords of Bonerama and the Mardi Gras Indians of Cha-Wa). The particularly touching track “In New Orleans” is a declaration of love to her hometown. The singer evokes its different neighborhoods: Congo Square and the French Quarter, of course, but also the legendary Mississippi River, the matrix of this unparalleled city.
