"‘Sunday vibe’ was the starting point. I generally think about moods and journeys when DJing and don't often pre-plan sets. I am excited by bringing different musical cultures and players together in a set and seeing how they hang together. Often this is a subconscious bi-product of my eclectic taste and life-long fascination with music across geographical borders. I noticed afterwards that this set included musicians from 12 different countries! In less pretentious terms – I chose some favourites, some I wanted to share and some instruments I love! Starting mellow and building some bounce along the way x"

🗣️ Q&A with Muddy Brown 🗣️
🎧 If you had to pick 3 genres that describe your mix?

"Genres, what genres! Definitely some jazz in there; west African groove and Arabic disco. I love a silly cover that works too!"

🔍 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music?

"Like most searchers of my generation, listening (and obsessively taping) John Peel Show or later the Mixing It on R3 is where it started.
In those days there was ONLY vinyl or tapes, so I would scour bargain bins, charity shops and take a punt on stuff – some blind alleys but also new passions!
Seeing Fela Kuti at Glasto in 1984 was the start of a lifelong love of afrobeat. At the time I was learning to play acoustic guitar and my heroes were players like Bert Jansch, Nick Drake, Neil Young etc.
Oh and everyone has a weird uncle or something – mine introduced me to Patti Smith, Grateful Dead, 70s Krautrock..."

🌍 Tell us about parties, events, collectives or labels that have inspired you:

"Moving from South Wales to Madchester in the 80s was really my first exposure to UK dance/DJ culture.
Nod to Manchester club culture and amazing acid house parties and raves!! It was so much more than the Hacienda – unbelievable mixing of different scenes!!
Getting to learn from people like Colin Curtis, Greg Wilson and meet some heroes like Joe Claussell, Moodymann, Gil Scott Heron and Linton Kwesi Johnson – owe it all to Manchester x
There are too many labels to mention but a few I could spend all my pennies on – Analog Africa, Mr Bongo, Habibi Funk, Batov, Hot Casa, BBE, Miles Away, Soundway, Matsuli, Sdban, Sofrito..."

💿 What’s your approach to digging?

"Regular and often is my approach to digging; everywhere and anywhere.
I will always try a cheapy or two – you never know and often there is something you can use – one tune, a wee bit you can use in a mix or even a hidden gem.
Be prepared to go off plan; I might go in with deep house on my wishlist but might come home with rare boogie or jazzfunk xxx"
