"I’m lucky enough to somehow be a full-time DJ, so I spend a lot of time trying to fill dancefloors. For this set, I wanted to return to what first got me into DJing - radio/curating. I compiled a tracklist of personal favourites - mostly stuff I don’t get to play out, but tunes that are on regular rotation at home. I love live music and going out dancing, but many of my most affecting musical memories have been whilst pottering about at home - that feeling of being stopped in your tracks, those solitary moments of awe… I’m all about that." - DJ Lozzatron

🗣️ Q&A with Lozzatron 🗣️

🎶 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music?
I’ve always been an obsessive liner-notes-reading kind of music fan. Growing up in the age of online forums and music blogs, as a teen I spent countless hours deep-diving and bonding with fellow nerds online. On one particular forum, users would compile their own downloadable ‘guides’ to artists, bands, labels, music from a certain era or state/country… it was this totally user-generated p2p library of music knowledge - so cool! I learned a lot about blues, jazz, punk, random DIY scenes and labels, it was really eclectic. Beyond that, there were some amazing blogs that helped me grow out of being a creepy little mosher and opened my mind to music from around the world. Me and a friend started our radio show Whirldfuzzz in 2014 at SOAS Radio, which gave us a place to research and chat about music, and ultimately we ended up being offered a slot on NTS.

🌍 Tell us about any parties, events, collectives or labels that have inspired you.
The first time I ever even looked at a set of decks was presenting live on NTS Radio… it’s pretty insane that we ended up being residents because we truly did not know what we were doing, but NTS is basically the reason I do this. We got so lucky - they are the best people and they were very patient and kind to us. Residents like Amanda Siegel (Crossed Wires), Louise Chen, Mafalda, Nabihah Iqbal… they’re always introducing me to amazing music on their shows. Events-wise, the 0800-DISCO gals and Cosmic Slop know how to throw parties that are super joyful and welcoming. Also CHUNK (RIP) were the best gang in the world - they taught me how to DIY and that genres don’t matter. Labels-wise, way too many to list but Now Again, Soul Jazz, Soundway, and Light In The Attic spring to mind.

🔍 Tell us about your approach to digging. Where do you find your music?
It’s funny because being neurodivergent can make life tricky, but having an obsessive nature, a tendency for novelty-seeking and an ability to fall deep into an internet rabbit-hole… these are traits that serve me well when looking for music! If you can see it as active research rather than procrastination, it’s fun to see what gems you might uncover. If I find an interesting release, I try to check out what else the label are putting out. Compilations are often a good starting point too. I don’t always have the budget for record shopping and it’s not as easy as it used to be to find bargains, but sometimes it happens if you’re patient. If I’m in a different city or country I will probably seek out the nearest record shop. In general, I just think music is my favourite lens through which to learn about people, places, history etc.
