ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Gary Peacock’s 1977 album Tales of Another, released by ECM and featuring Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette, caused quite the stir. In a sense, it heralded the trio that would be led by Keith Jarrett from 1983 onwards. It would be unfair to reduce Gary Peacock’s achievements to those of this memorable trio, however, because whatever the context and the playing partners, there is always a personal element in his playing; one of an understated lyricism that balances embodiment and abstraction, as one music critic pointed out.
Gary Peacock, who died in 2020 at the age of 85, will be remembered as one of the great innovators of the double bass. He demonstrates this with a solo performance in the first 49 seconds of this concert. His sound is rough, his playing sober and modest, and as the Jazz Dictionary points out, he was more a double bassist of sound than of tempo.
With the face of an old Zen monk, he shows off his elegance and refined musicality. The second half of the concert veers towards a more playful atmosphere, which Peacock embraces, smiling as he listens to his fellow musicians. This is especially the case with Joey Baron's unstoppable drum solo and Marc Copeland's adventurous notes on the piano.
