ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Spanning funk, rap, folk, rock and, of course, jazz, the New Orleans Live program is multifaceted and encapsulates the atmosphere of the Crescent City. Located in the Mississippi Delta, the river artery from which everything flows, this subtropical city has long been the entry point for the great migrations to the northern cities. Muddy Waters is a particularly apt incarnation of this phenomenon, his name connoting fertile alluvium and the flowing, migratory sediment of blues.
Hailing from New Orleans, the band Sweet Crude encapsulates this musical hub, with its frenzied percussion, Cajun-accented fiddle and allusions to the Deep South (Nutbush, the hometown of the late, lamented Tina Turner, is mentioned), at times sung in French. Another exciting group, Partners-N-Crime, embodies an eloquent cultural dimension with rap, funk and soul elements, as attested to by the opening track and its rhythm which is directly influenced by Curtis Mayfield's “Freddie's Dead.” Finally, the poignant Ashley Sno delivers a solo set that is irresistibly authentic, at times recalling her folk counterparts Layla McCalla and Tracy Chapman.
