British jazz stands in stark contrast to the rest of the European scene. An heir of Caribbean music and marked by club culture (an essential element of the genre closely linking it to the sound system and rave scenes), British jazz also advocates a certain form of solidarity, attested to by the interchangeable presence of different figures on multiple projects. YolanDa Brown is an undeniable star, sharing Jamaican heritage and an obvious love of the saxophone with jazz pioneer Courtney Pine. Slightly less traditional than Pine, however, she draws from a host of musical influences.

Supported by four musicians, including a first-rate guitarist, the English composer mixes jazz with other styles such as rock, soul and, of course, reggae. YolanDa Brown also has a fantastic sense of humor, as attested to by her description of the Bank Holiday; a British public holiday celebrated with joy and good humor, but sometimes in the midst of the British drizzle... And of course, covers are essential. This is reflected here by a reinterpretation of “Summertime,” the lullaby written by George and Ira Gershwin and cornerstone of the monumental opera Porgy And Bess; a track that YolanDa Brown revisits with brilliance.
