The Bhuttos are amongst a few hundred feudal families, mostly large landowners, that have dominated politics and business in Pakistan since its creation in 1947. In the eyes of the west, Pakistan’s Benazir Bhutto was a beacon of democracy and a staunch foe of Muslim extremism, but at home, the slain opposition leader was a controversial figure, mired in allegations of corruption and accused of acquiring wealth, worth over 1.5 billion dollars.
