Tuesday Blues #266 -
Ragtime chord progressions sound amazing but they can challenge your understanding of chord theory. I mean, how can nearly every chord in a progression be dominant? The short answer is, it sounds good because it sounds good!

But we get a bit deeper into why it sounds good in this lesson. It’s based on a concept called secondary dominants where we use the V7 chord of a V chord to precede our target chord. The chords are outside of the key, but they sound great because of the strong relationship between a chord and a dominant 7th chord built a 5th above the starting chord.

Yes, it can be confusing, but hopefully, this video will help you make sense of this.
