ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
New Orleans as a hotbed of rootsy music comes fully alive in the episodic TV show New Orleans Live that spotlights the wealth of the city—from r&b soul singers to rockabilly bands to old-time zydeco. The format showcases the acts sequentially. Step by step, they perform in order then repeat throughout the set interspersed by short interviews with the artists about their stories and the rich legacy of Crescent City music. Recorded in front of a live audience at Generations Hall, this 2015 show opens with the stars of the set, the rollicking gumbo band Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters that start tearing the house down with rhythm-charged music that is a ripe combination mixing Cajun music with Afro-Cuban drum charges.
Accordion is key, but so is the leader ripping up a killer metal washboard. They start out with their hot tune “Show Me to Zydeco” where Rockin’ Dopsie dances in a James Brown style including moments of splits. They also play a Delta blue ballad, “Tee Na Na,” toward the end of the hourlong show. Next up comes sweet r&b/soul singer Kourtney Hart, who delivers a total of five songs, including her hit “My Boy.” The wild card of the pack is the Americana band Christian Serpas & Ghost Town, once described as Led Zeppelin meets Johnny Cash. It’s straight up rockabilly cookers with scorching songs like “Get Up, Get In” and “Read Em and Weep.” Overall in this episode, what’s impressive are the diverse musical attacks that show how vital New Orleans music is.
