Mitral stenosis and mitral regurgitation (also known as mitral insufficiency) are two different types of problems that might need valve replacement. In mitral valve stenosis, the valve is unable to open fully, and less blood is able to move from the left atria into the left ventricle. In mitral valve regurgitation, the valve is leaky, and some blood leaks back into the left atrium instead of properly moving forward into the left ventricle.
Open-heart surgery or minimally invasive heart procedures are common practices for replacing a mitral valve and it depends on the severity of the mitral valve disease.
The Edwards Lifesciences MITRIS RESILIA mitral valve technology is designed to handle the pressure of the mitral position in the heart. It is built on the trusted Carpentier-Edwards PERIMOUNT valve platform and made with RESILIA tissue for decreased calcification.
