Detroit Crime Prevention 101: Why Paper in Windows is a Bad Idea During Renovation

Vacant properties in Detroit commonly get broken into. The best way to tell an intruder your house is vacant is to put paper on your windows. We don't use paper during our renovations. If there is nothing worth stealing in the house, we leave the windows uncovered so potential thieves can see that there is nothing there. Once we have a furnace in the house, we put a house sitter in there. Seeing a car in the driveway has always deterred break-ins for us in the 300+ properties we've renovated. We also use miniblinds as soon as the kitchen cabinets are in. Miniblinds usually mean a house is occupied.

We use double-keyed locks on the doors while we renovate. Once a tenant moves in, we have to change it back to the twisty kind of locks. We use door cuffs as well.


What was strange is that this house was broken into while the owners were there renovating it and their car was in the driveway. The intruder also knew right where the light switch was.

Lucky for the intruder, he didn't get any closer to the owner. The intruder had no idea what kind of man he was facing. The kind I'm happy to be on the right side of!
