
I’m a mechanical engineer, a machinist, and I’ve been using CAD for nearly 17 years. Because of my own experience, I’m actually kind of fed up with this one. There are a lot of CAD programs out there and it’s not easy at all to figure out which ones work for you. There are a lot of free versions, but the real question is are they worth messing with? Should you dive into a subscription for a more professional paid software to get more capabilities? Can you do that without taking a huge chunk out of your budget? If you’re just wanting to make things for your 3D printer on the side for fun, this can be a headache that deters people from even trying causing them to download files from Thingiverse for a while and then just give up. It all seems intimidating and I’m going to go through a few of my thoughts about what the best CAD software is for different kinds of people and perspectives.
