ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
This new episode of New Orleans Live is prefaced by a tribute to Allen Toussaint, one of NOLA's greatest talents. This genius composer, performer and arranger, who passed away in 2015, left an undoubtable mark on the city of Louisiana. Author of a substantial discography, he also made a name for himself alongside names including Dr. John, The Meters and, of course, The Neville Brothers. Contributing to the Afro-American musical repertoire with the disco anthem “Lady Marmalade,” Toussaint would later gain wide renown through his skillful collaboration on an album with British rock legend Elvis Costello.
Following in the footsteps of this musical masterpiece, Shamarr Allen is no small name in the music world. Associated with names as diverse as Willie Nelson and Lenny Kravitz, the trumpeter neatly encapsulates the New Orleans sound. Backed by the Underdawgs, he remains unrivaled at injecting groove into everything he touches, as attested to by “Can You Feel It.” “Naughty Professor” is another case in point, bringing his organic touch to the realms of funk and jazz. Powerful and effective, this signature quality is particularly evident on the aptly named “Brain Storm,” a track reminiscent of the heady playing of Joe Bowie and Defunkt. Finally, Lynn Drury performs a string of tracks with a deliberately Americana feel, instilling an ambient mood: highly recommended.
