🗣️ Q&A with Thirdspace (Nick Richards) 🗣️
💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music?
I've always been drawn to the Detroit scene's rich heritage and the fluidity between Jazz, Improv, and Electronic genres. Moodymann, Shigeto, WaaJeed, Carl Craig, Norm Talley, Mike Huckaby & Theo Parrish are always on heavy rotation. I don't necessarily attempt to copy their production style. My focus is perhaps more on the feeling & soul within their music—something that is rooted in the Black experience. Exploring this aspect of identity within my own music is important to me.
🎶 Tell us about any parties, events, collectives, or labels that have inspired you.
I regularly source music from labels like Tartlet, Rhythm Section International, and Upstairs Asylum. Being a Leeds resident, Cosmic Slop parties have been a major influence and changed how I think about genre and approaches to fusing ideas. The community there has been super supportive and given me opportunities to play in the space, which has been so important for crafting my live set.
🔍 Tell us about your approach to digging. Where do you find your music?
Ideas for music creation come from everywhere—what I listen to, people I meet, life experience. It's not something that I try to force. There is such a focus on creating music quickly these days. For me, it's about patience, sitting with myself, and trusting the process. Creating music can bring such a meditative experience; it is a precious thing.
