ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
Melody Gardot’s music is a subtle cocktail of jazz, folk and bossa nova. Her 2022 album Entre eux deux, created in collaboration with pianist Philippe Powell–son of Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell–exemplifies her unique sound. Like her peers Madeleine Peyroux and Norah Jones, the American artist’s production is particularly smooth, striking a fine fine balance between artistic complexity and popular appeal.
Filmed in 2018 at Château d'Hérouville near Paris, this documentary reflects the atmosphere of the studio, launched by the incredible Michel Magne in the 60s. It unveils a stunning live set, accompanied by an engaging interview in which Gardot evokes her passion for Tom Jobim. Backed by around ten musicians including an impressive string section, Gardot opens the set with a dreamy cover of “Baby I’m a Fool.” She follows this up with “If The Stars Were Mine” before switching to French on “Les Étoiles,” a track filmed in the gardens of the exquisite French chateau. Following in the footsteps of other musicians who have recorded in the studio before her, including the David Bowie & Iggy Pop duo and Elton John, she rounds off the performance with a truly masterful ending – a cover of Chet Baker’s hit “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” Impressive.
