Shalamar was very infuential during the 1970s and 1980s, whose musical talents covered musical genres such as Soul, Disco, R&B, and Pop. Its members were Howard Hewett, Jody Watley, and Jeffrey Daniel.
They were founded by Solar Records founder, Dick Griffey, and they were managed by the late Don Cornelius, host of Soul Train. Their string of hits from the late 1970s through mid 1980s, such as 'Second Time Around', 'Night To Remember', 'This is For The Lover In You', 'Take That To The Bank', 'Dead Giveaway', 'Dancing In The Sheets', were huge in the US and worldwide.
The person responsible for their success was Leon Sylvers III, who wrote and produced their songs. Watley and Daniel left after 1983. When Howard Hewett left in 1986, the group never became the same, as far as image and sound was concerned and the group disbanded after 1990. Shalamar reunited in 2005, for the British television series, Hit Me, Baby, One More Time, with original members Daniel and Hewett, and with new singer Carolyn Griffey (daughter of Dick Griffey). Carolyn's mother is Carrie Lucas, who sang background vocals on Watley's albums.
