ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
A marvelous composer and performer between folk, soul, and jazz, Terry Callier was an artist as rare as he was priceless. Started in 1965, his discography experienced a twenty-year hiatus (from 1978 to 1998 when he was a computer programmer) and there are few images of his concerts. Recorded at the Berlin club, Quasimodo, in 2005, seven years after the fabulous album *TimePeace* that marked his return, this film is probably the best document produced about him. His stage performances remained fragile moments that people always feared would be his last, and a certain emotion inevitably gripped the audience.
It gripped Terry Callier himself, whose attitude expressed great humility, to the point of trying to find his voice during the first few minutes of "Ordinary Joe". But the Chicagoan (like his childhood friend, Curtis Mayfield) ended up deploying his wonderfully expressive voice on a repertoire that of course included his 1973 masterpiece, *What Color Is Love*. The concert ended with a touching exit from the stage to the ovation of swooning spectators. We understand. A profound humanity emanated from Terry Callier, who like a Bill Withers, sang about love and peace for his whole life. A point of reference for the acid jazz movement, collaborator with Urban Species, then Massive Attack and Beth Horton, he fortunately touched several generations before his death from throat cancer at the age of 67. We are left with these images and records we never get tired of listening to.
