Cuban music is a reflection of the Caribbean region with its abundance of languages and cultures. A mix of European, African and Amerindian influences, these rhythms have produced a diverse variety of styles over the last few decades; including, of course, rumba, as well as the sublime bolero, and equally popular styles such as son cubano (a genre immortalized by the Buena Vista Social Club) and the lively pachanga. This flavor-packed musical cocktail so dear to the Latin diasporas was exported by Cubans and neighboring Puerto Ricans to New York in the 1960s, forming the famous salsa with its wide range of influences including soul, funk and rock.

Orquesta Mercadonegro echoes this salsa repertoire and especially the Fania All Stars, the supergroup and side band of Fania Records. Like this collective, the group brings together a pan-Latin identity, and also doubles as a backing band; they used to regularly accompany, for example, the vivacious 70s performer Celia Cruz. An impressive formation (with no less than ten of them on stage), Orquesta Mercadonegro quickly wins over the Moods Club audience. The musicians’ extensive experience shows through in their powerful compositions. The brass parts are impeccable, the percussion is in perfect unison and Armando Miranda and Josbel Rodriguez’s vocals sweep everything in their path. Cesar Correa’s solo performance, the leader of this impressive group, is a captivating interlude of virtuosity – and a reminder of the impact of classical music on the surrounding tropical universe.
