Today we shall learn about care and propagation of a beautiful colourful foliage ornamental plant called Copperleaf or Java White Plant with scientific name Acalypha wilkesiana, (sometimes Khalifa plant )and its medicinal value in treating fungal skin infections.

Acalypha wilkesiana – the copperleaf plant is an evergreen shrub which can grow upto 3 metres in height and with a spread of upto 2 metres across. The leaves are coppery green with red splashes of colour. This gives them a mottled appearance. The leaves are large and broad with teeth around the edge. The flowers are reddish and occur in spikes at the end of branches.
Now we will quickly learn about How to care copperleaf plants:
It can be damaged by both drought and frost. It prefers a good temperature above 10 °C and also humidity.
Light: The plant grows well in partial shade or also some direct sunlight. It should be protected from strong winds. The leaf colour develops best on plants kept in bright light.
Soil: The plant prefers light well drained soil like other plants. It can be damaged by both drought and frost. So it needs good amount of watering. But not standing water or overwatering.
Diseases: The plant is susceptible to mealy bug infection, which can result in growth retardation.
Other names of this plant are: Acalypha tricolor, Java white, fire plant, Fire Dragon Plant, Beefsteak Plant and so on..
Lastly!
Coming to Propagation of copperleaf plant which is done by stem cuttings at any time of year. Now we will try to grow copperleaf plant from these stem cuttings.
As usual we will first trip the leaves or make half cuts on some of them and make 6 – 10 inch cuttings with the usual 45 degree inclined cut at the base below a node.
Then we will dip the base into this rooting hormone chemical (Indole butyric acid) powder. You can check out my video on rooting hormone powders from link in description and also from card link at top right corner of this video.
Well, we dip the cuttings, make a hole and insert into the soil. Copperleaf prefers a compost rich soil, so you can add more of compost like vermi-compost or cowdung into this potting mix.
Then lastly water it and keep for few weeks 3 – 4 weeks undisturbed in a shady warm place. That’s it..
