The part of buildng no one talks about... #building #selfbuild

If you’ve made 3 trips to Home Depot in one day, you know this lesson well 😅 Buying and moving materials is a big part of any construction project. Houses inherently require a large amount of heavy and/or bulky stuff to make - concrete, lumber, steel, roofing, siding, windows, doors - basically everything. If you’re planning a project either for yourself or for a client, don’t forget to factor in this time and labor! 🧠 Even before the physical procurement comes the mental procurement. A “takeoff” or estimate is figuring out what item you need, and how much of each item. This is a skill that experienced pros in their trade can do easily, but DIYers need to think A LOT about. For example, designing a whole plumbing system in your head, then translating that to a bill of materials. One fitting missed, and there’s no stocked truck to fall back on.. you’re heading to the store 😅 Here are some tips: 1️⃣ For lumber: check board prices from 2 local lumber yards + HD/Lowes. Ask about free delivery 2️⃣ For plumbing/mechanical/electrical: check SupplyHouse.com and HD/Lowes first - for 90% of common items they will be the least expensive and come with free shipping. Long or heavy items (i.e. pipes) will always be cheaper locally. 3️⃣For specialty stuff, you’ll need to go to a local supply house. This requires more work to call ahead and check price/availability, but can sometimes result in better price. Our 60+ pieces of electrical conduit were the cheapest at a supply house. -------------------------------------------------------- ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby. We upload a YouTube video every Saturday night at 7️⃣pm EST, and post daily on Instagram!
