New Acura MDX versus the Genesis GV80 comparison

This is a Motormouth couple car review of the new 20212 Acura MDX and the 2021 Genesis GV80. The Acura MDX comes with a 3.5L V6 engine with a 10 speed automatic transmission. It has 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. It has the same engine as the outgoing model but now comes with a 10 speed automatic transmission instead of a 9, what a difference. The Genesis GV80 comes with two engines, a 2.5L turbocharged 4 cylinder with an 8 speed automatic transmission. It has 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. The 3.5L twin turbo charged V6 engine also has an 8 speed automatic transmission with 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. The MDX sports its first-ever double-wishbone front suspension, combined with an all-new multilink rear suspension for precise road holding and highly responsive handling while maintaining a smooth and comfortable ride. The steering has been retooled to make it more agile and precise. There are 5 drive modes, snow, comfort, normal, sport and individual. The GV80 V6 comes with a RWD bias AWD system with a electronically control LSD rear differential but only on the top $85,000 trim. The V6 models do come with an adaptive suspension with road preview, using a forward camera and sensor system to read the road and soften the suspension over late bumps, but the GV80 with the base engine comes with regular shocks and spring, the MDX has adaptive suspension on all trims.The MDX sits on a 2.8 inch longer wheelbase and a stance that is 1.4 inches wider than the previous model. The biggest change is the dash to axle ratio, it has been extended by 4 inches which gives you a longer hood. It comes with a diamond black grille and jewel eye LED headlights, taillights and 19 inch wheels. 20 inch wheels are standard on all other trims. The GV80 isn’t nearly as long or as wide as the MDX. It has an athletic, yet elegant looking exterior with signature Genesis design elements including, the parallel lighting treatment that runs from the front down the side to the rear lights. Genesis uses what they call the G-Matrix design throughout the exterior and interior including, the grille, wheels and interior pieces like the quilted seats. The GV80 wheels size ranges from 19 to 22 inches with the top two trims getting 22 inch wheels. The MDX comes standard with a 12.3” display screen with a touchpad,
a 12.3” digital instrument cluster, heated leather seats, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, wireless smart phone charging, driver seat memory, a panoramic moonroof and a power tailgate. The second row has a removable middle seat for easy walk though access to the 3rd row, which now offers an additional 0.4 inches of headroom and 2.4 inches of legroom. The seating position is also 2 inches higher from the floor compared to the outgoing model. Cargo space has also increased and now features under-floor storage behind the third row, with 80-percent more space available under the cargo floor. All other trims except the base model get a power tailgate with hands-free access and walk away close, power folding side mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, 2 position memory seats for passengers and heated 2nd row seats. A head up display and perforated leather seats are standard on the top Platinum Elite trim and ventilated front seats are standard on the top two trims.
The GV80 comes with many of the same standard features as the MDX except it offers a 14.5” touchscreen and an 8 inch LCD instrument display, you can get a 12.3” instrument display on the top trim. The interior focuses on the beauty of open space, the centre console offers a sense of minimalism with very few physical buttons. It is equipped with a jewel-like rotating electronic gear selector. There is genuine wood trim, a leather wrapped dashboard with contrast piping and stitching and leather seating. The Nappa leather quilted seats, power folding 3rd row seats as well as the 64 colour ambient lighting are only available on the top trim. While the MDX gets wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, the GV80 still needs a cable.
The 3rd row of the GV80 is difficult to access and is really only for small children. If you plan to use all 3 rows on a regular basis, the GV80 may not be big enough for you. The cargo space is lacking with all 3 rows in use. However, first and second row occupants will really enjoy the luxury, comfort and space this SUV offers.
