Here are the first images of the production Acura MDX set to arrive at dealerships in Feb of 2021 as a 2022 model. This new MDX marks the 4th generation of this best selling premium 3-row utility. In fact, Acura was the very first manufacturer to offer a standard 3rd row of seats in a mid-size utility just 20 years ago. This new model is a bold design change both inside and out following up on the success of the smaller RDX. The biggest mechanical changes are a more rigid platform with a new standard double wishbone front suspension and the introduction of a Type S model which will arrive in the summer of 2021.
Lets start with what is under the hood, then the design and interior. The 2022 Acura MDX still has the same 3.5-litre direct-injected V6 engine rated at 290 peak horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. peak torque Acura claims that there are new anti-friction technologies to improve both power delivery and fuel economy. The MDX is now paired with Acura’s 10-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift and standard paddle shifters. Next summer will see the Type S arrive with Acura’s all-new 3.0-litre turbocharged DOHC V6 engine, producing an estimated 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. The new MDX Type S will feature standard 21-inch wheels with 275-series tires, and additional braking power coming from 4-piston Brembo front brakes. Acura claims the chassis is much stiffer to handle the extra performance and the SH-AWD has been updated too with 40 percent more rear torque capacity and 30 percent quicker front-to-rear torque transfer than the third-generation system in the previous MDX. The Acura SH-AWD® system can transfer up to 70-percent of engine torque to the rear axle during normal driving conditions, while continuously apportioning up to 100 percent of that rear-axle torque between either the left or right rear wheels.
Now the look and design. I like where Acura is going with its new products, this is a handsome machine and a nice upgrade. The front looks wide and more upright, the RDX design is mirrored here. Plus, the longer hood and swept design presents a sense of motion. This is called the dash-to-axle ratio, which has been extended by 15cm. Dimensionally, the new MDX sits on a 7cm longer wheelbase, with a stance that’s 3.5cm wider in the front and rear. Additionally, the new MDX sits 0.8cm lower than its predecessor. A 7cm increase in wheelbase is a lot for a new product, so interior space will be much better. Inside is similar to the dash of the new TLX. The front seats are Acura’s sport seats featuring 12-way adjustment, three-way seat heating and three-position memory – all standard. MDX A-Spec adds ventilated front seats while the Platinum Elite Package gains additional power-adjusting side bolsters and thigh extensions for 16-way adjustment. The 2022 Acura MDX features the new, all-digital Cockpit, which replaces physical gauges with a customizable 12.3-inch driver’s meter. MDX Platinum Elite Package benefits from a 10.5-inch full color Head-Up Display (HUD). The 2022 MDX also gets the latest generation True Touchpad Interface, featuring a 12.3-inche screen. And just like the new TLX, there is a track pad in the centre and a volume knob. Now in the second-row the MDX features a removable center seat providing owners three seating options; a traditional bench for 3-across seating and 7-passenger total capacity, or wide pass-through for access to the third row. This is simple and clever. The third row is improved on the 2022 MDX with an additional 1cm of headroom, 6cm of legroom and a seating position that’s 5cm higher from the floor compared to the outgoing model. With the new standard panoramic moonroof on all MDX trims, the third row has a light and spacious feeling. In MDX Platinum Elite trim, rear seat occupants have their own USB charging ports on the left and right side of the cabin. Behind the third row, cargo space has been increased 1.5 cu.-ft. to 16.3 cu.-ft. total; cargo space can expand up to 71.4 cu.-ft. with both second and third rows folded. So here are the first details about the new MDX, coming in Feb2021. The addition of the Type S makes things exciting but pricing of that will come closer to the summer on-sale date. I like where Acura is heading, the design is strong, the interior roomy and it is fitted with the features people like, well maybe not the track pad so much. If you like these Covid virtual releases, pleas subscribe to get more, they are arriving almost every week and thanks for watching the information on this new MDX.
