How to Grow Oleander from Cuttings | Growing Kaner Nerium Oleander Cuttings and Care in English

Today I will show you How to grow Oleander or Kaner tree from cuttings and also some important points on Oleander Care – The approach is little different when it comes to Oleander. So please watch this video till the end. Oleander or Nerium oleander is a shrub or small tree in the Apocynaceae family, toxic in all its parts. It is most commonly known as nerium or oleander, from its superficial resemblance to the unrelated olive Olea. Oleander is one of the most poisonous commonly grown garden plants – Do not worry, its toxic only when consumed orally. Okay, now regarding the usefulness of this plant. Its an ornamental plant in gardening because if its beautiful colors white or pink flowers. Also medically Drugs derived from N. oleander are been investigated as a treatment for cancer, but still unsuccessfully. Its also used in anti-aging creams. Well, Now that’s in brief about the Kaner or Nerium plant. Now I will show you how to grow oleander from cuttings with two different approaches or methods. This is easily available in many parks, home gardens or even roadside. You can get its cuttings easily. I as usual got these cuttings from my Hospital. So, few things to remember in growing oleander / Kaner from cuttings is : 1. Either start the cuttings immediately or 2. Immerse the cuttings in water, till you plant to start the process. That’s what I did, I brought these and immersed in water for about 6 hours. Then later, in evening when I got time, I will be starting the process. Here I Have different ranges of cuttings like they differ in thickness and also maturity. Some are green soft branches and some are woody. Then make cuttings of about 6 - 8 inches minimum for softer cuttings and little longer for woody cuttings. In Gardening, its actually just experimenting that’s makes it an interesting hobby, ofcourse with some knowledge. Here I am also trying the conventional 45 degree cutting angle at the point of insertion. And for some I am also peeling the woody bark layer with a sharp cut so as to expose the cambium layer. These also explained in my Graftings video and also Air layering video. Well, here I have removed the bark in this cuttings. Okay, now… We have totally about 9 cuttings, out of which 3 are soft, 3 medium and 3 woody. Now watch carefully, we are going to use two methods, basically experimenting things. Firstly few cuttings we will insert in Potting Soil – what I have done based on some research is oleander needs compost rich soil to grow cuttings. So I have mixed a lot of vermicompost into the pots along with regular potting soil. You can also use cow or horse dung powder. Then secondly, we will put some cuttings in plain water. Few thing to do here is, do not disturb them for few days, except for changing water every 3 days or so for water cuttings and watering alternate days or so depending on whether to keep the soil cuttings moist. Well now we will start planting the cuttings of oleander. We will use our same old organic rooting hormone (that’s actually cinnamon bark powder from kitchen). Dip each cutting and make a hole and insert into the soil to about 2 inches deep. Then, insert some cuttings into water glasses and keep them aside without disturbing for few days. Infact this is done, because for Oleander roots are supposed to develop faster in water. Lets try experimenting and check the results. Well, keep them undisturbed for few days away from direct sunlight and also preferably you can also cover these with polythene bags.
