This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai IONIQ 5 compact electric utilities. The Model Y Long Range AWD has two independent electric motors with a 75 kWh battery. The Long Range model has 384 horsepower and 531 km/318 miles of EV range.
There is also a Performance model, which has 450 horsepower and 488 km/303 miles of EV range The IONIQ 5 comes with RWD and AWD options but we are going to focus on the AWD Long Range model as it competes best with the Model Y. It has a 77.4 kWh battery, 320 horsepower and gets 414 km/256 miles of EV range The Model Y offers a minimalistic interior design with an open and wide dash creating excellent visibility. There is no head-up display or gauge cluster, everything is controlled at the centre touchscreen. The technology is impressive in this Tesla, the touchscreen is responsive, quick and intuitive to use. Even the voice-commands are fast whether you are putting on heated seats or opening the tailgate. Your speed is located at the top left hand corner of the screen and the screen is positioned well making it easy to see and use. While the quality of the interior is no-where near the fit and finish of the IONIQ 5, the seats are comfortable. There are some soft touch materials in the cabin but quite a bit of hard plastic which scratches easily. The Model Y comes standard with a 15” touchscreen, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a black leatherette interior, power driver and passenger seats, heated rear seats, 5-passenger seating with an available 3rd row for $4,000 CAD/$3,000 USD.
If you prefer the white leatherette upholstery, it will cost you an extra $1,300 CAD/$1,000 USD. The Model Y does not come with ventilated front seats or Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The Tesla also offers features like Camp Mode and Dog Mode, you are able to shut the vehicle off and maintain the temperature that’s comfortable in the car. If you leave your dog in the car, a sign is put on the touchscreen letting everyone know you will be back shortly and the dog is safe. You can also watch Netflix and Youtube if you want to watch shows while charging your Tesla and play games. Tesla is continually doing software updates for their vehicles as well. The IONIQ 5 has an eco-friendly interior and a smart living theme with integrated digital tech and flexible spaces to create an expansive and open interior. Sustainable materials are used throughout the cabin from recycled plastic bottles for the armrests, plant based yarns, natural wool yarns and bio paint with plant extracts. There is a moveable centre console that can slide back and forth 5.5 inches, this allows the driver to freely enter and exit the cabin on either side when parked in a narrow spot. There is also a driver’s seat with a relaxation function on the top trim, you can take a nap while waiting for a charge. The IONIQ 5 comes standard with a 12.3” touchscreen and a 12.3” digital gauge cluster, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a power driver’s seat, a manual passenger seat, black-cloth upholstery and heated front seats. The top trim with the Ultimate package in Canada for $5,000 comes with all the extra features, like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heads-up display, an 8-speaker Bose Sound system, wireless charger, a power passenger seat and a leatherette interior. This is also the first Hyundai to offer over the air wireless updates to the multimedia and navigation system.
