Officials from the Toronto Police Service (TPS) provided an update following a "brazen exchange of gunfire” outside of a Queen Street recording studio on Monday night.

Officers were in the area for an unrelated investigation when an allegedly stolen Honda pulled up in front of the business – where a birthday party was being hosted – and three people got out and shot approximately 50 rounds at the building. Several people promptly exited the recording studio and began returning fire. Officers were able to box the suspects’ vehicle in as they tried to flee.

Twenty-three people were taken into custody and 16 firearms were seized, according to Toronto Police Staff Supt. of Detective Operations Joe Matthews, who said all of the guns “originated from the U.S.”

“Another deeply concerning aspect of the incident is the age of those involved. These individuals taken into custody ranged in age from 16 to 30 years old," Matthews said during a press conference on Thursday. "Not only were they allegedly brazenly displaying these weapons on social media, but they also brought these firearms out into our streets and engaged in reckless exchange of gunfire... It is a miracle that no one was injured or killed," he added.

Matthews revealed one of the primary suspects was a 16-year-old male who was wanted in a homicide. He has since been charged with second degree murder for the killing of 30-year-old Matthew Burghardt, on April 25th, 2024.
