This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC compact luxury SUV. As the best-selling Mercedes-Benz model in the last two years, it is one of the most important vehicles in the brands product portfolio. Mercedes-Benz says the new GLC comes with all the attributes that make a Mercedes-Benz SUV…. like uncompromising handling safety on the road, outstanding driving dynamics and superior performance when off road.
The new model has a turbocharged 2L 4-cylinder engine with a 48 volt mild hybrid system with an integrated starter-generator and a 9-speed automatic transmission. It has 258 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, 3 horsepower and 22 lb-ft more than the current model. The ISG, integrated starter generator provides a boost of up to 23 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Standard AWD in Canada but in the US, RWD and AWD are both available.
Key components of the GLC’s suspension system are a new four-link suspension at the front and a multi-link independent rear suspension mounted to a subframe. Mercedes-Benz claims the standard suspension provides better ride quality, noise comfort, agile handling and driving enjoyment. It is equipped with an amplitude dependent damping system.
The new GLC remains the same width but is over 2 inches longer and lower than the outgoing model with improved aerodynamics, it has a drag coefficient of 0.29 which makes it two tenths better than the current model at 0.31. The GLC has a new exterior look with a redesigned front end, standard LED high performance headlamps that connect directly to the grille to emphasize the vehicles width. The grille and window surrounds are both in chrome and the optional Sport and Night packages feature a Mercedes-Benz patterned grille.
Mercedes-Benz claims the GLC has significantly improved on and off-road. In fact, the GLC has been designed for off-roading and is prepared for this use with several new features and systems. Standard equipment includes an off-road driving mode and downhill speed regulation. In off-road mode, the GLC with the 360-degree camera offers a transparent engine hood. The central display shows a virtual view under the front of the vehicle including the front wheels and their steering position. This enables the driver to recognize obstacles such as large stones or potholes at an early stage. Mercedes-Benz claims there is also an improvement in noise comfort. At higher speeds the GLC is quiet with a refined sound with very low road and wind noise. The GLC gets the latest generation of the infotainment system with two large displays and a full screen navigation as standard equipment. The GLC has the same tech that is in the new C-Class sedan which has trickled down from the S-Class giving it a modern design. The new GLC comes standard with a 12.3” multi-information display and an 11.9” centre touchscreen which is slightly angled towards the driver for ease of use. The optional Burmester surround sound system has 15 premium speakers and a total output of 710 watts. Mercedes-Benz is offering more standard equipment in the GLC just like the new C-Class sedan making this a highly attractive vehicle from the start. Popular features like the larger displays, smartphone integration, wireless charging and heated from seats are all standard. In Addition the packaging has been simplified to reduce the effort of choosing from numerous individual options. Design elements such as paint finish, upholstery, trim and wheels will be left up to the customer to decide. Not a lot changes space wise inside the GLC, front and rear legroom is about the same but cargo space has increased by 50 litres or almost 2 cubic feet. The GLC is a popular towing vehicle according to Mercedes-Benz and the new edition is designed for this purpose. The towing route planner for the navigation system is a new feature. In the centre display, routes can be planned and takes into account passage widths and passage heights making towing as safe as possible. Enhanced trailer manoeuvring assist is optional on the new GLC and automatically regulates the steering angle of the towing vehicle up to a speed of 5 km/h, 3 mph and an uphill gradient of up to 15%. The new GLC will be available in the spring of 2023 and pricing will be announced closer to the launch date. The AMG GLC 43 and 63 are coming later as well.
