High-profile Canadian political figures and Indigenous leaders gathered in Winnipeg on Sunday to pay their respects to the late Murray Sinclair at his public memorial service, following his death at the age of 73. As Iris Dyck reports, Murray is being remembered as a vanguard who helped the country directly face its dark past — and the Indigenous communities still struggling with it — to carve a new path forward.

British Columbia’s health ministry says the first suspected human case of avian influenza has been detected in Canada. A teenager in the province has tested positive for the virus — also called bird flu — which can be fatal. There have been several cases detected in animals, but this is the first time it has crossed over into a human in Canada. Health officials are trying to determine the source of exposure. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed he and Trump have already spoken three times since Trump won the presidency, and that the pair see "eye-to-eye" as they seek to strengthen their alliance against Iran. And finally, food banks across the country are dealing with an unprecedented surge in demand. In its recent report, Food Banks Canada said the country marked a grim milestone in 2024, with over 2 million visits in one month alone. Among the provinces seeing an increase was New Brunswick, where organizers in Moncton have reintroduced financial screening of its clients to ensure that the limited food they have is reaching those most in need.
