This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in versus the Hyundai Sonata Fe PHEV, also a plug-in hybrid SUV.The Toyota RAV4 Prime has a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine with Toyota’s hybrid system and an ECVT, 302 horsepower and 68 km/ 42 miles of EV range and standard AWD. It has an 18.8 kWh battery and you can put regular fuel in this RAV4 Prime. The Santa Fe PHEV has a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor, a 6-speed automatic transmission and a combined 261 horsepower. It offers standard AWD and 50 km/30 miles of EV range. It has a 13.8 kWh battery and you can put regular fuel in this Santa Fe PHEV. For EV rebates in Canada, the RAV4 Prime with an 18.8 kWh battery qualifies for the full Federal rebate of $5,000. The Santa Fe with a 13.8 kWh battery qualifies for half, $2,500. Electrified vehicles need to have a battery that is 15 kWh or larger to qualify for the full Federal EV rebate. There are also Provincial rebates available in most Provinces but there are some that don't participate, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Ontario. In the US, the Santa Fe qualifies for a tax credit up to $6,587 and the RAV4 Prime $7,500. The RAV4 Prime comes standard with a 6.6 kW onboard charger in Canada. In the US, you get a 3.3 kW charger but a 6.6 kW charger is available in a package. With a 3.3kW charger and a 120-volt outlet, your charging time is 12 hours and with a 240 volt outlet, it’s 4.5 hours. With a 6.6kW charger and a 240-volt outlet, your charging time is 2.5 hours The Santa Fe comes with a 3.3 kW onboard charger. With a 120-volt outlet, your charging time is 10.5 hours and with a 240-volt outlet, it’s 3.4 hours. The RAV4 Prime has a comfortable, practical and versatile interior with plenty of storage with the battery mounted underneath the floor. Standard features include, an 8-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch multi-information display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front and rear cloth seats, 8-way power driver’s seat and a heated steering wheel. In the US, a heated steering wheel is not standard, packages are available to add extra features. The top trim is where you’ll find the larger 9” touchscreen, a wireless charger and mixed Softtex and fabric seats. Add the Technology package to get driver seat memory, a power passenger seat, ventilated front seats, a head-up display and an 11-speaker JBL Audio system.
Hyundai vehicles are becoming more upscale and you can see it in this interior with quilted leather seats, a 12.3” digital driver display, a convenient and practical floating centre console with lots of storage. There are plenty of physical buttons in the cabin including a button shifter and you will find it to be open, spacious and comfortable. The battery pack is located under the front passenger seat, so it has no impact on cabin or cargo space.
Some standard features include, an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, leather-seating surfaces, heated front seats, a leather wrapped heated steering wheel and 8 way power driver and passenger seats. The top trim is where you’ll find ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a wireless charger, the digital driver display, 4-way power driver’s lumbar support, a panoramic sunroof and proximity activated smart liftgate. There is no head-up display available in this PHEV or the option of the larger 10.25” touchscreen in Canada, it is available in the US.
