The Pipistrel aircraft company is considered a forerunner of high tech innovations in light aviation. Initially, the company produced hang glider-style aircraft with uniquely designed wings that earned it the nickname “bats”, which translates to “Pipistrello” in Italian, where the company derived its name. The Velis Electro, one of the company's headliners, broke seven world records in a single flight, an accomplishment so exceptional that it will take years before another aircraft achieves the same level of performance. It successfully completed an incredible journey from the Alps in Zurich all the way up to the North Sea, a feat never previously performed in an electric aircraft. In 2022, the company was acquired by Textron Aviation as one of its brands, but Pipistrel continues to retain its operations in Slovenia and Italy.
