This is a Motormouth couple car review of the new Ford Escape PHEV or plug-in hybrid SUV.This plug-in hybrid has a 2.5L 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle powertrain matched with an ECVT and a 96 kW electric motor. Total system output is 221 horsepower and it offers 60 km/37 miles of EV range. It is FWD only and you can put regular fuel in this Escape PHEV. The new design allows for more cargo and cabin space with the battery stored underneath the vehicle. It has a 14.4 kWh battery so it doesn’t quite qualify for the full Federal EV rebate in Canada of $5,000. Batteries need to be 15 kWh or larger, this Escape plug-in hybrid qualifies for $2,500. In the US, you qualify for a federal tax credit up to $6,843. We are testing the top Titanium trim with chrome accents, body coloured door handles, a black mesh grille with chrome surround, dual chrome exhaust tips, LED headlamps and LED taillamps. The Escape PHEV offers a ground clearance of 7.3”, not as much as the RAV4 with 8.4” or the Santa Fe with 8.2” but more than the Tucson at 7.1”. When it comes to charging with a 110-volt Level 1 charger, the estimated time to fully charge the battery is 10-11 hours and using a 240-volt Level 2 charger is 3.5 hours. The Escape PHEV gets excellent fuel economy, 2.2Le/100km city/highway combined/ 105 MPGe. Once the battery is depleted it gets a combined rating of 5.8L/100km/40 MPG. With a full tank and a full battery, it can travel 784 km/520 miles. There are three trims to choose from, the base model gets an 8” touchscreen which is the only size available across all trims, Sync 3 with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a 6.5” instrument cluster, cloth heated seats, manual driver and passenger seats and Ford Co-Pilot 360 which includes, blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert. In the US, you can add packages like the cold weather package for $645 USD to the base trim to get heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated side-view mirrors and the remote start system or the convenience package for $945 USD for features like a power driver’s seat and power liftgate. In Canada, I feel the best value trim goes to the middle SEL trim. That’s where you’ll find a 10-way power driver’s seat, 4-way manual passenger seat, power lift-gate, heated steering wheel, an engine block heater, remote start system, heated side-view mirrors and back up sensors. You can add the technology package for $2,500 CAD/$1,050 USD if you are interested in the 10-speaker B&O sound system, a hands-free foot activated tailgate, 12.3” digital instrument cluster and a wireless charger. A panoramic sunroof can be added for $1,750 CAD. In the US, you can add the sunroof for $1,495 USD on all trims; it is not included in a package. The top Titanium trim we are testing has some extra features; our test model is $46,749 CAD. It has ambient lighting, a power passenger seat, driver seat memory and a standard 12.3” digital instrument cluster. If you add the titanium package for $2,300 CAD/$1,825 USD to this trim, it includes, leather trimmed perforated seats, a head-up display, wireless charger and a panoramic sunroof.
