The Payolas are a Canadian group who were at their peak of success in the 80's thanks to outlets like MTV and mainstream radio stations. Their sound started out as new wave and eventually turned more toward the pop rock scene to keep up with the times.

The band got their name from the payola scandal. A pay for radio play type of scheme.
