This was the rise of the super-club in the UK, at the time ravers where getting older and going back into the clubs as it became harder and harder to find a decent party due to the criminal justice bill, (Tory Cunt Knockers!!!!) and the shady shite that was taking the rave scene in a very dark direction.
This club was not really one venue, it had 4 rooms with 3 different sound systems. There was Cream, (otherwise known as the back room), Nation, (The main room), the Courtyard and the Zoo bar. All of which made the place immense. The queues to get in went around the building, around the corner and down the next street, I kid you not to say Cream was popular was a fucking understatement.
Getting in was just as much of a ball ache with the then head door manager. She was a real piece of shite! She would knock anyone back if she didn't like the cut of their Jib! I saw her knock back people that drove up from London just because she didn't like the lads shirt!!!
However, once inside the place more than made up for all the bollocks of getting in. The atmosphere was like nothing I've ever experienced. The crowd was one entity singularly unified in the pursuit of absolute joy. At no time was this more evident than when Alistair Whitehead dropped Michael Jackson's, "Wanna be startin somethin," when the line, "Ma ma se ma ma sa, ma ma coo sa," came in, every person in the place was clapping, singing and smiling as one!!! As fucking cheesy as it sounds it was breath taking.
Who could forget the performance of the Princes of Pop herself. Kylie blew the place up with her stellar sex appeal and the orchestra backing the smooth song selection. Even the girls we were with at the time said they'd turn for Kylie!
Of cause, not everyone was in love with the place and some twat even manged to let off a CS Gas canister which meant the club had to be evacuated. Well Cream and the Zoo bar at least. How the fuck he got in with how tight the door policy was is anyone's guess? There was a silver lining as many of us got to witness James Burton and a bunch of door man fill the lad in good and proper in the car-park across from the club.
That's enough rambling from me for now, I would love to here your Cream stories in the comments below?
