Another affordable guitar shootout, you say? Indeed it is! Here we’re putting the Harley Benton DC Junior FAT in Benton Blue up against the Vintage V120 ReIssued edition in Two Tone Sunburst, in what I’m billing the battle of the fat neck Juniors!

Yes, the DC Junior FAT and the V120 are both obviously modeled after the Gibson Les Paul Junior (doublecut and singlecut models respectively) and both these models have very chunky neck profiles indeed. Otherwise, they each have a single P90 pickup (a stacked humbucking Roswell on the Harley Benton, and a semi-stacked Wilkinson on the Vintage), and mahogany bodies and necks. The Harley Benton has an ebony fingerboard, while the Vintage’s is Lignum Rosa, and the Vintage is fitted out with Wilkinson hardware, while the Harley Benton has Wilkinson tuners and otherwise generic fixtures and fittings.

So, if you do dig a fat neck, which of these guitars is best? In this video, I try and find out. I play a bunch of riffs on both in my favorite styles so you can hear which sounds best for the kind of music you play, and at the end I give you my detailed thoughts on the good things – and the not so good things – about both guitars.

By the way, the crunch sounds today come courtesy of the Benson Preamp pedal, which I just got, and absolutely love so far! More on that one here:

Here are some links to the various playing samples and info bits:

My setup was as follows: I ran the DC Junior FAT and the V120 into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head, and used the Benson Preamp and the Revv G3 for different gain sounds. The amp went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done.

Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
