Early rock n roll guitarists have a distinct sound, that even today's guitarists have trouble duplicating. One of the "secrets" to that sound was the Marshall JTM45 amplifier, the first guitar amplifier produced by Marshall and released in 1963. While modern amps have a gain and volume knob or even rely on digital effects to create distortion, the Marshall JTM45 had no master volume. Instead, each channel had a "loudness" knob and relied on multiple tubes to create gain. When overdriven the amps produced that distinct tone. Guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour and Pete Townshend have all used the classic amp during their careers.
