On January 24, 1978, a critical malfunction forced a Soviet spy satellite, Kosmos 954, to rapidly descend towards Earth's atmosphere. The uncontrolled re-entry led to the satellite's disintegration, scattering radioactive debris over a large area in northern Canada. This incident prompted an extensive cleanup operation known as “Operation Morning Light.”
Now, 40 years later, the legacy of nuclear-powered satellites still looms, reminding us of the ongoing threats they pose as they continue to orbit the Earth.
