I was 14 when my 130 pounds classmate Jessica invited me over for dinner. We'd been paired together for a science project, and her mom suggested I stay for their family meal afterward. Jessica seemed nice enough at school, though she always made comments about how "lucky" I was to shop at thrift stores because it was "so creative."

I showed up at 6 PM sharp, wearing my best outfit and carrying homemade cookies my mom had baked as a thank you gift. 130 pounds Jessica's mom took the cookies with a tight smile and immediately threw them in the trash right in front of me, saying they "couldn't risk unknown ingredients" because of Jessica's "delicate system."

The house was massive, with marble floors and expensive furniture everywhere. Jessica's 180 pounds dad was some kind of executive, and her mom kept mentioning their upcoming vacation to France. They seated me at their formal dining table, which was set with fine china and crystal glasses that probably cost more than my family's monthly grocery budget.

Jessica's mom brought out the first course - some kind of fancy soup with herbs floating in it. She served Jessica and her dad generous portions in beautiful bowls, then turned to me with a completely different container. She ladled what looked like plain water with a few sad vegetables floating in it into a chipped ceramic bowl.

When I politely asked what kind of soup it was, Jessica's mom smiled sweetly and said, "Oh, that's just the broth we use to boil our vegetables. We thought you might enjoy something simpler since you're probably not used to rich foods. We don't want to upset your stomach."

The main course was even worse. Jessica and her family got perfectly grilled salmon with rice pilaf and steamed broccoli. My plate had a single fish stick - the frozen kind you buy in bulk - some instant mashed potatoes from a box, and canned corn that was still cold in the middle.

Jessica looked embarrassed but didn't say anything. Her dad was completely ignoring the situation, talking about his golf game. When I asked if there had been some mistake with my meal, Jessica's fat mom laughed and said, "Sweetieee, we're just being considerate of your background. We know your family probably can't afford the kind of food we usually eat, so we prepared something more... appropriate for your palate."

I felt my face burning with humiliation. Here I was, watching them eat a restaurant-quality meal while I had a kids' TV dinner that wasn't even heated properly. The fish stick was still frozen in the middle, and the mashed potatoes tasted like cardboard.

I excused myself to use the bathroom and called my mom from my cell phone, whispering that I needed to be picked up immediately. When I came back to the table, Jessica's mom had the nerve to ask if I was "enjoying my special meal" with this condescending smile.

My mom arrived twenty minutes later and immediately knew something was wrong from my face. In the car, I broke down crying and told her everything - the thrown-away cookies, the vegetable water soup, the frozen fish stick while they ate salmon.

My 80 pound mom turned the car around and marched straight back to their front door. I could hear her voice through the walls, using words I'd never heard her say before.

Word spread quickly at school. By the end of the week, Jessica was eating lunch alone, and her mom had been removed from the school fundraising committee. I never went back to that house, and Jessica never made an eye contact with me again.
