In January 1966, Mrs Hawkins and Mrs Sanders caused consternation in Venice when they proposed sterilisation to reduce the city's 35,000 cat population. Local newspapers accused them of launching a gestapo-like campaign, whilst The Animal Protection Society threatened to call in the police. John Edwards travelled to Venice to explore the drama as part of 'Reporting 66', a series of documentary reports from around the world.
