It is very clear that the Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko is anti-France and anti-West. Even before he became the Prime Minister, Sonko had been quite vocal against France's presence in Senegal and the African continent. However, the Senegalese President has not really been seen as anti-France or anti-West. For example, a few months ago, he paid a visit to France to discuss deepening relations between Senegal and France. Besides this, he has repeatedly stated that he planned to change the relationship between France and Senegal to one based on mutual benefit. This is different from the rigid stance taken by the military leaders of the Sahel region who completely ended any form of relationship with their former colonial masters. So, it came as a surprise when a few days ago, President Faye demanded that France shut down its military bases in Senegal. The question is “Is Faye becoming anti-France? Or is this what he meant by changing the relationship between France and Senegal? Let's find out.
On Thursday, November 28th, 2024, Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye urged France to shut down its military bases in Senegal. This announcement comes as Senegal prepares to commemorate the 80th anniversary of a notorious colonial-era massacre. Interestingly, on the same day, French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged for the first time that the French Army was responsible for the massacre of Senegalese soldiers in 1944. President Macron made this known in a letter addressed to the Senegalese authorities. There is no doubt that the only reason France is acknowledging this as a massacre is because France is losing influence in Africa.
