Mary Crickett: In 1729, English convict Mary Critchett was transported to Virginia. She escaped with five male prisoners, seizing the sloop John and Elizabeth. Critchett guarded captives by sitting on the hatch, preventing their escape. They sailed into Chesapeake Bay but were soon captured by HMS Shoreham. Tried in Williamsburg, Virginia, Critchett and her accomplices were convicted of piracy and sentenced to hang, making her one of the few women executed for piracy during the Golden Age.
Lyrics:
Come listen close, ye scurvy Sailors
I’ll tell you what this lass can do
I’m Mrs. Mary Crickett, fierce and true
The sea’s my home, I’ll see it through!
Mrs. Mary Crickett, fierce and true
The sea’s her home, she’ll see it through!
With cutlass sharp and cannons loud
I lead the storm, I wear it proud!
No man can claim to hold me fast
The sea is mine, as long as I last
The sea is hers, as long as she lasts!
Raise the flag and feel the breeze
The sea is mine, we rule these seas!
Gold we take, ships we seize
There’s none as bold as me—and these!
Gold we take, ships we seize
There’s none as bold as her—and these!
I came from Devon, poor and small
But I heard the ocean’s call
Aboard a ship, I stowed away
And that’s the start of my bold way!
Aboard a ship, she stowed away
That’s the start of her bold way!
They thought me weak, a girl to tame
But soon they learned my fearsome name!
I fought my way and earned my Sailors
Now none dare cross me—would you?
None dare cross her—would you?!
Raise the flag and feel the breeze
The sea is mine, we rule these seas!
Gold we take, ships we seize
There’s none as bold as me—and these!
Gold we take, ships we seize
There’s none as bold as her—and these!
From Kingston to Havana’s bay
They fear her name, they fear her sway
A shadow on the darkest night
She strikes like thunder in the fight
I steer the "Vixen," sleek and fast
The navy’s fleet, it never lasts!
They chase me hard, but I slip by
With every storm, I ride the sky!
With every storm, she rides the sky!
Raise the flag and feel the breeze
The sea is mine, we rule these seas!
Gold we take, ships we seize
There’s none as bold as me—and these!
Gold we take, ships we seize
There’s none as bold as her—and these!
Now they’ve caught me, shackles tight
But they can’t steal my spirit’s light
The waves will whisper of my name
And none forget this pirate’s fame!
The waves will whisper of her name
None forget her pirate’s fame!
I face the gallows with no fear
For even death won’t hold me here
Remember me, on every wave—
It’s Crickett’s name the seas will save!
It’s Crickett’s name the seas will save!
Raise the flag and feel the breeze
The sea is mine, we ruled these seas!
Gold I took, ships I seized
No one was bolder than me—or these!
Gold she took, ships she seized
No one was bolder than her—or these!
