A selection of my favourite deep afrohouse sounds. Music that takes me back to a rooftop bar at sunset in Nairobi. (PS: I appreciate the irony of recording a mix at The Vinyl Whistle with USB’s)
📍 Recorded at The Vinyl Whistle, Leeds.
🗣️ Q&A with RAS MYLES 🗣️
⏳ How long have you been collecting and mixing for?
I’ve been mixing since mid-2020, but I’d say I’ve been collecting music since I first heard Sister Nancy on my mum’s radio while she was cooking.
💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting?
Music and dance are sacred forms of self-expression for me. I’ve always felt the evocative power of music, whether it’s memories of sharing meals with my family or dancing with friends after a long week.
🔍 Where do you find your music?
I find most of my music through online rabbit holes—YouTube, Soundcloud, Bandcamp. That’s how I discovered some of my favorite labels like Awesome Tapes From Africa, Soundway Records, and Nyege Nyege Tapes. Online publications like PanAfrican Music are also great for uncovering music often ignored by Western audiences.
🎶 Any label/artist/collective recommendations for someone to start digging?
